Custom Traction Pad Specifications for Better Samples

Custom traction pad sampling becomes expensive when a supplier receives only a product photo and a logo file. For surf brands, board manufacturers, distributors and surf shops, the first sample should confirm fit, EVA construction, groove geometry, arch and kick position, adhesive, branding and packaging—not expose missing decisions. A useful specification turns these points into one reviewable brief with dimensions, drawings, references and acceptance notes. This guide explains what to define before requesting a sample, which details can remain open for technical review, and how to keep the approved sample linked to the final production record. If you already have a board-tail template, reference pad or artwork, use the checklist below to prepare a clearer quotation request and reduce avoidable sample revisions.

Start with the board and intended fit

The first specification is where the pad needs to fit. A reference image may show the look, yet it rarely establishes the usable area on the target board, the tail outline, the centerline, or the clearance around the leash plug and other features.

A practical starting package includes the board type, the target application area, overall length and width, orientation, and any zones the pad must avoid. A dimensioned drawing is the clearest reference for a custom outline. When a drawing is not available, a physical sample or a carefully measured board-tail template can provide the geometry needed for review.

Daywin’s sample-approval guidance also recommends placing a traction pad sample on the target surfboard tail. That simple fit review helps settle whether the shape and size work on the actual board, not only on a screen.

Choose the pad format before styling details

The product route determines how much of the pad is being customized. Daywin currently presents two sourcing paths: selected unbranded rectangular EVA sheets and custom-cut pad sets made to an approved drawing or sample. The appropriate route depends on whether the program needs a general sheet format or a defined retail-ready outline.

For custom-cut programs, the Daywin leashes and traction product page identifies shape, groove plan, EVA specification, adhesive, logo, and packaging as review points. Current stock, colors, dimensions, order quantity, and quotation details still need to be confirmed for each inquiry.

The piece layout belongs in this early decision. A one-piece, two-piece, or three-piece set changes the outline, gap placement, alignment, and packaging. If the reference product uses multiple pieces, the brief can show the gap between sections and how the pieces align along the board centerline. The sample can then be compared with the same layout rather than an assumed version of it.

Define the EVA construction and surface geometry

EVA, color layers, surface texture, and molded or routed geometry work together. They are better treated as one construction package than as isolated appearance choices.

For the EVA itself, the brief can identify the required grade or approved reference, total thickness, number and sequence of color layers, and the desired surface feel. Applicable material grades, thickness ranges, and colors are confirmed for the current program during quotation and sampling. A reference sample is useful when a tactile target matters, because words such as soft, firm, or grippy can be interpreted differently.

The surface drawing can define the groove pattern, groove direction, spacing, edge treatment, and any visual transition between color layers. It can also locate the arch and kick relative to the pad outline. Available arch, kick, and groove dimensions and their production tolerances are confirmed during technical review and sampling. Until those ranges are confirmed, the article should not present a design value as a standard Daywin specification.

Treat adhesive as part of the product specification

Adhesive is not only a backing option. Its suitability depends on the application surface, surface preparation, installation method, and the conditions in which the finished board will be used.

Daywin states that adhesive type and preparation guidance are confirmed during sampling. For a meaningful evaluation, the sample brief can identify the target board surface and how the team plans to prepare and apply the pad. The test method can then use the relevant surface rather than an unrelated panel.

The applicable adhesive type, approved substrates, preparation steps, conditioning period, and acceptance method are confirmed during technical review and documented in the quotation or sample record. Unsupported claims about waterproofing, temperature resistance, or service life would not help a sourcing decision.

Make the logo method fit the construction

The logo file is only one part of a branded traction pad. Placement, size, color count, finish, and the chosen production method all affect how the mark integrates with the pad.

Daywin’s current product page lists recessed or embedded PVC badges, multi-color EVA splicing, and screen-printed graphics as possible branding directions. A badge may require a defined recess and fit. EVA splicing makes the color structure part of the pad construction. Screen printing places artwork on the surface and therefore needs an approved size, location, and color treatment.

Applicable badge size and recess depth, print area and color count, artwork line weight, and EVA color-layer fit are confirmed after the artwork and construction have been reviewed. Sharing vector artwork together with a marked placement drawing gives the factory enough context to assess the selected method. If a logo method changes after the first sample, it can change both appearance and construction, so the approved method should stay attached to the sample record.

Match packaging to the sales channel

Packaging is easiest to define before the sample is approved, especially when the product will go directly to retail or distribution. Daywin lists header cards, bags, and boxes as channel-dependent options, together with artwork, barcode, labeling, unit pack, master carton, and packing quantity requirements.

A retail brief can specify the unit-pack format, visible product orientation, label copy, barcode data, country or market information supplied by the buyer, and how the pieces stay aligned inside the pack. A board-factory program may use a simpler pack, but the unit count and outer-carton arrangement still need a shared reference.

Applicable packaging configurations, materials, print finishes, pack quantities, and carton specifications are confirmed according to the selected sales channel and order requirements. Regulatory or labeling statements also depend on the destination market and should come from confirmed requirements rather than a generic template.

Build one sample brief that can become the production reference

A useful traction pad brief is compact enough to review but complete enough to compare with the physical sample. It can include:

  • Board type, target fit area, orientation, and any clearance zones
  • Overall outline, length, width, piece count, gaps, and edge treatment
  • EVA reference, total thickness, color layers, surface texture, and groove drawing
  • Arch and kick locations, profiles, and dimensions
  • Adhesive requirement, target surface, preparation approach, and sample test plan
  • Logo artwork, method, size, color, finish, and placement
  • Unit packaging, label and barcode files, master-carton needs, and destination market
  • Expected order quantity and the specific questions the sample needs to answer

The approved sample, drawing, artwork version, and packaging file can then remain linked. That record gives both sides a stable reference when reviewing changes or preparing a production quotation.

What the approved sample should settle

A traction pad sample is most useful when it closes the open decisions in the brief. The review can cover the overall shape on the target board, piece alignment, EVA feel, groove appearance, arch and kick position, adhesive backing, logo execution, color combination, and packaging presentation.

Daywin’s OEM surf product sample approval process provides a broader framework for recording approval points and revisions. For this product, the sample record should remain tied to the traction pad drawing and construction details rather than only a general approval message.

MOQ, sample timing, bulk lead time, and pricing are confirmed in the current quotation because they depend on the selected construction, branding, packaging, and order context.

Request a traction pad sample review

To review a custom traction pad program with Daywin, send the target board or fit reference, dimensions or drawing, piece layout, EVA and color direction, groove/arch/kick requirements, logo artwork, packaging needs, expected quantity, destination market, and what the first sample needs to confirm. Daywin can use that information to identify open specifications and prepare the next review step.
