How to Specify a Custom Surfboard Fin Logo for OEM Production
A successful custom surfboard fin logo requires more than sending a brand file to the factory. Before sampling, the buyer and manufacturer should confirm the fin construction, artwork version, logo size, placement, orientation, color reference and surface finish.
For Daywin custom fiberglass fin programs, the currently confirmed branding option is a water-transfer decal applied beneath the final clear coat. Artwork, color and placement are reviewed during sampling. Because logo suitability depends on the selected fin, the branding specification should be approved together with the physical sample—not separately from it.
Confirm the Fin Construction First
The logo process cannot be selected independently from the fin itself. Construction affects the surface, production sequence, finishing process and point at which the graphic can be applied.
Daywin currently offers different production routes for custom fins, including CNC-machined G10/GFK fins and molded honeycomb constructions. Selected solid fiberglass, carbon-reinforced and Volan-style options can also be reviewed according to the project.
Before discussing the logo, confirm:
- Fin system and model
- Template and dimensions
- Construction and material
- Surface finish
- Target order quantity
- Retail or bulk packaging requirement
This allows the factory to assess the artwork against the actual fin specification.
Daywin’s Confirmed Logo Option
Daywin’s current custom fin program supports water-transfer decals placed beneath the final clear coat.
This route can provide:
- A smooth, integrated surface
- Reduced exposure of the graphic edges
- Support for logos, gradients and selected detailed artwork
- Logo placement approval during sampling
- Better coordination between the graphic, fin color and finish
The clear coat helps protect the applied graphic during normal use, although final appearance and durability still depend on the fin construction, artwork and use conditions.
Not every graphic will reproduce equally well. Small text, narrow lines, complex gradients and transparent areas should be reviewed before sampling. Alternative branding processes should only be considered after Daywin confirms their suitability for the selected construction.
Prepare a Complete Artwork Brief
A logo file alone does not provide enough information for reliable sampling. A complete artwork brief should identify exactly what needs to appear on the fin.
Include the following:
- Approved artwork fileSend the final brand-approved logo or graphic. Add a revision number or date to the file name so that an older version is not used by mistake.
- Logo dimensionsSpecify the intended visible width and height. Avoid approving the logo only from an unscaled visual mockup.
- Color referenceProvide the relevant Pantone reference, color sample or approved visual reference. The final appearance should still be checked on the physical fin sample.
- Placement drawingShow the logo on the real fin outline. Identify the distance from a clear reference point such as the base, leading edge or trailing edge.
- Face and orientationConfirm whether the logo appears on the left fin, right fin, center fin, one face or both faces. Show the intended reading direction.
- Background treatmentExplain whether the logo requires a transparent background, solid background or coordination with the fin color.
- Surface finishState whether the target appearance is gloss, matte or another finish available for the selected construction.

Define Logo Placement on the Actual Fin
A logo that looks centered inside a rectangular design file may not appear centered on a curved or tapered fin.
The placement drawing should show:
- Logo width and height
- Distance from the selected reference edge
- Rotation or alignment
- Fin face
- Fin position within the set
- Reading direction when displayed or installed
For a multi-fin set, do not assume that one placement instruction automatically applies to every fin. Side fins and center fins may require different artwork scales or positions.
Retail presentation should also be considered. A logo designed to look upright when the fin stands on its base may appear differently when the set is placed inside a wallet or retail package.
Approve the Physical Sample
A digital mockup helps confirm the general layout, but it cannot replace a physical sample.
During sample approval, check:
- Correct logo and artwork revision
- Logo scale and placement
- Correct fin face and orientation
- Color appearance
- Graphic clarity
- Visible edges or distortion
- Surface and clear-coat appearance
- Consistency across all fins in the set
- Fit with the intended packaging presentation
Photograph the approved sample from consistent angles and retain the artwork revision, placement drawing and sample identification together.
If a logo or color is changed after sample approval, treat it as a specification revision. Depending on the change, another proof or physical sample may be required before production.
Control Artwork for Repeat Orders
Repeat-order consistency depends on using the same approved information—not simply locating a previous logo attachment in an email thread.
The repeat-order record should connect:
- Fin model and construction
- Artwork file and revision
- Logo dimensions
- Placement drawing
- Color reference
- Surface finish
- Approved sample
- Packaging artwork
- Previous order reference
If any element changes, identify it before quotation and production. This makes it easier to determine whether the existing approved specification can still be followed.
Separate Fin Branding from Packaging Branding
The logo on the fin and the logo on the packaging should be treated as separate specifications.
Daywin can review custom branding placement for selected fin wallets, hang tags and outer packaging. Each item may need a different logo size, layout or artwork file.
For a retail program, specify separately:
- Fin logo
- Wallet logo
- Hang-tag artwork
- Product label
- Outer carton mark
- Barcode or market-specific information
This prevents artwork intended for the fin from being resized or reused on packaging without review.
What to Send for a Custom Fin Logo Review
To begin a project-specific review, prepare:
- Fin system and model
- Template, drawing or reference sample
- Preferred construction and material
- Logo or graphic file
- Target logo dimensions
- Placement reference
- Color reference
- Desired surface finish
- Estimated order quantity
- Packaging requirement
- Target delivery date
Daywin will review the suitable production route, artwork application, sampling requirements, MOQ, quotation and project schedule after receiving the complete specification.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can every logo be applied to a custom surfboard fin?
Not automatically. Suitability depends on the artwork, physical size, fin construction, surface and finish. Detailed graphics, narrow lines, small text and gradients should be reviewed before sampling.
Can the logo be placed under the clear coat?
Yes. Daywin’s currently confirmed option uses selected water-transfer decals beneath the final clear coat. Artwork, color and placement are confirmed during sampling.
Should I approve the digital mockup or the physical sample?
Use the mockup to confirm layout, but approve the physical sample for final logo scale, placement, color appearance and surface finish.
Can the packaging also carry our brand?
Selected wallets, hang tags and outer packaging can be reviewed for custom branding. Packaging artwork and fin artwork should be supplied and approved separately.
